JOB FILLED - Senior Gummy Formulator

Job Description: 

Working as part of the Product Development team, the Senior Gummy Formulator develops best-in-class nutritional supplements focusing on multiple different gummy applications to be sold in the US and international markets. Gummy applications include vegan and gelatin. Gummy formulas include vitamins, minerals, botanical extracts, nutraceutical ingredients, amino acids, and other approved dietary supplement ingredients. Primary responsibilities include working with pilot equipment on site to successfully scale-up in gummy production.

In this role you will:

  • Collaborate with the PD Team & Nordic Manufacturing to develop new best-in-class gummy supplements and renovate existing formulas based on customer and/or internal feedback (i.e., supply, legal, regulatory)
  • Research and identify optimal ingredients for new and/or existing formulations to include inactive and active raw materials
  • Work with Contract Manufacturers to ensure quality, consistency, and on time deliveries
  • Support current raw material sourcing and secondary sourcing with technical material review and evaluation 
  • Maintain working knowledge of new and innovative trends with an emphasis on gummy applications
  • Conduct evaluation of raw materials and formula options to determine feasibility to ensure timely launch
  • Work with Contract Manufacturers to ensure quality, consistency, and on time deliveries
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with key vendors 
  • Develop required documentation to complete projects through the Stage Gate process
  • Develop close working relationships with cross functional departments (QA, Purchasing, Operations, Sales, Marketing, Nordic Manufacturing) 
  • Maintain knowledge of regulatory and customer requirements
  • Develop gummy formulas using pilot equipment documenting critical control parameters required to successfully scale-up in production
  • Coordinate sensory evaluations to ensure the final formula meets or exceeds organoleptic expectations
  • Work with Nordic Manufacturing scaling up pilot to production
  • Provide training in gummy development 
  • Set-up, tear down, and clean pilot equipment 
  • Other Duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • BS in food science, chemistry, biology, pharmaceutical engineering, or related field required
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience developing dietary supplement gummy formulations 
  • Must be able to read and interpret documents such as standard operating procedures, and regulations
  • Must be able to work cross functionally with many different departments and various skill levels
  • Knowledge of Food & Supplement regulations (including DSHEA, FD&C Act Section 21 CFR 111) is preferred
  • Ability to objectively review the primary and secondary scientific literature to help support ingredient or product efficacy and safety is preferred
  • Ability to deal with complex problems with many variables
  • Basic skills in math, including algebra are required
  • Meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to produce high quality work with limited supervision.
  • Must possess knowledge pertaining to the nutraceutical industry and must be well versed in a variety of ingredients, their usage, forms, activities and all other relevant characteristics.

Computer Skills:

  • Must be proficient with MS Office and have advanced Excel skills. 

Other Requirements:

  • This position will be expected to come to HQ in Watsonville, CA on a regular basis. Must be flexible to relocation, if needed.
